750 ml (3 cups) flour
 500 ml (2 cups) sugar
 20 ml (4 tsp) baking powder
 3 ml (1/2 tsp) bicarbonate of soda
 125 ml (1/2 cup) cocoa
 1 ml 1/4tsp) salt
 500 ml hot water
 190 ml (3/4 cup) oil
 5 ml (1 tsp) vanilla essence
 50 ml (4 tbs) vinegar
Icing:
 125 g butter
 375 ml (1 ½ cups) icing sugar
 15 ml (1-2 tsp) cocoa
 a few drops vanilla essence
 stiffly whipped cream

Preheat oven to 180°C

Grease, line and regrease 2 x 23cm cake pan

Place the dry ingredients in a mixing bowl

Combine the rest of the ingredients and pour over dry ingredients

Mix well and divide into pans

Bake for +/- 20 minutes

Remove from oven and allow to cool in baking pans for 10 minutes

Cool completely on wire rack

Spread with icing and sandwich together, spreading the rest of the icing around the sides.
