Preheat the oven to 180C. Cream margarine and sugar well. Work in the sifted dry ingredients. Add syrup to make stiff dough. If dough seems too sticky add a little more flour. Knead and roll out on a floured board to approximately 5 – 8 mm thick. Cut out with a cutter, or use a gingerbread woman pattern. Make a hole in the top using a skewer if you wish to hang them from the Christmas tree. Carefully lift gingerbread women onto a greased baking sheet using a spatula. Decorate with cherries, raisins and Smarties and bake for about 10 minutes, or decorate with glace icing once cool. Tie ribbon through the holes to hang on the tree. Cool slightly on baking sheets and carefully lift onto cooling rack.
